Godspeed
Well, Jerry Falwell has gone on to his final reward. I’m not qualified to speculate on what that reward might be.
It’s customary in the American mainstream media to eulogize the dead by glossing over their faults, so I would expect a lot of the coverage over the next few days to tastefully omit just what a vile piece of shit the man really was.
So here, in that spirit, are a few of his more choice quotations:
- “Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions”
- “AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”
- “The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews”
- “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.’”
- “The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country”
Yeah. The guy was a prince. He’ll be missed.

Jerry Falwell, much like Fred Phelps and other right-wing whackadoos… while they do mislead a lot of folks and breed animosity, they also serve the noble purpose of exposing the ugly underbelly of the religious right’s core beliefs & attitudes: arrogant, insecure hate-mongering with a hearty helping of ignorance. This in itself has been enough to polarize a lot of people to the left.
