I may be a little late to the party… CNN is reporting that “several well-placed GOP sources in Washington and Idaho” are saying that Senator Craig will be resigning today. (I do wonder about using “well-placed” and “in Idaho” together, but I digress.)
I think we all enjoy a good Republican sex scandal, but I don’t know what to make of this one. Is it possible Craig was really naive enough, after 16 years in the U.S. Senate and ten years in the House before that, to think that if he pled guilty to a lesser charge, that it would just go away? Being anywhere near politics, or just watching the news, or even just watching a random episode of The West Wing seems like it would be enough to disabuse you of that notion.
So, I’m hoping he doesn’t resign, and runs for re-election, if only so I can see the campaign posters: “Larry Craig. He’s not gay, he’s just stupid.”

| Announcer | Now, Senator, I understand you’d like to give a statement regarding your June arrest for soliciting sex in a public men’s room? |
| Craig | In June, I overreacted and made a poor decision. While I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct at the Minneapolis airport or anywhere else, I chose to plead guilty to a lesser charge in the hope of making it go away. Let me be clear: I am not gay and never have been. |
| Announcer | So let’s get this straight; you’re okay with people thinking you’re dumb enough to plead guilty and think this would go away, just as long as no one thinks you’re gay? |
| Craig | Hello? Do you you see that little “R” under my name? |
| Announcer | Point taken. |
