Yee-haw

Yee-haw

In case you’re wondering, it’s an 11-year-old who can run faster than her father.

It occurs to me now that this strip might have worked better 14 years ago. I’ve been hearing this tired complaint since long before I moved to Texas. Oh, poor us! We’ve spent a couple hundred years making nigger jokes, and now the big mean PC police say we can’t anymore, but people can still be mean to us!

For the record, I disagree with the so-called “PC police” (although I think their power has been wildly exaggerated by the right) and think anyone should be able to make fun of whomever they want. But I can’t stand the disingenuousness of complaining that other people can make fun of you when, really, all you care about is that you can’t make fun of others.

I’d be a lot more sympathetic if Southern culture wasn’t riding roughshod over the American landscape. We’ve put up with your NASCAR, your Larry the Cable Guy, even your fucking president, but damned if we’re gonna stop taking the piss at you every chance you get.

Do I believe the dire warnings of an impending culture war? You’re god damn right I do.
