Cast of Characters
The de facto leader of the Monkey House crew, Monkey Angst is honest and reliable. Since buying the Monkey House, Monkey Angst has found himself in the unenviable position of landlord to the others.
He’s plagued by doubt, rarely finding comfort in life’s pleasures. He has been known to smile, however, with each drop in George W. Bush’s approval ratings.
Monkey Angst’s roommate and confidante, Monkey Love can be sensitive, caring, and trustworthy. Can be, but isn’t. Rather, he tends toward being narcissistic, shallow, and obsessed with sex.
Monkey Love apparently used to date Julian, long ago, but cheated on him with a women’s soccer team. He’s just that big a slut.
The sheep lives in the Monkey House while he is trying (with no degree of success thus far) to kick the sweet, sweet junk that rules his life.
In between fixes, has has been seen driving a cab and training with the FARC in Colombia, and has been both an evangelical born-again Christian and a Catholic archbishop.
Sugar Monkey is the niece of Monkey Angst, and lives with the guys temporarily, due to circumstances which are not yet clear. She is innocent and cute, and in her heart secretly yearns for all the Disney products her parents let her have, but her uncle won’t.
The Devo Monkey
No one knows who he is or what his name is. I don’t know where he came from or what his game is. Monkeys Angst and Love’s third roommate is simply there, on the couch, watching television and taking up space. Somehow he always manages to make rent, so no one asks too many questions.
Monkey Angst is crazy about this cute hipster chick, despite her initial refusal to tell him her name. Little is known about her, except that she’s smart and opinionated and seems to like Monkey Angst for some reason.
Every inch the model of a modern homosexual, Julian is cultured, tasteful, and moustachioed. Despite his utterly unconcealed contempt for Steven, he remains committed to their relationship nonetheless.
Julian’s boyfriend and opposite number, Steven can be a bit of a moron at times. Still, he’s a good-natured soul, at his happiest when in Julian’s company.
Monkey Sarge is Monkey Angst’s best friend from way back. His life took a bit of a different path than his friend’s, however, and he wound up in this monkey’s army, as a put-upon E-6 staffing the local recruitment office.
About the Strip
Monkey Law got its official start on January 1, 2002. Since then, updates have been a little on the sporadic side, a fact due in part to the fact that I don’t do this strip for a living and am constrained by the amount of free time I’m afforded, but due mostly to the fact that I’m utterly lazy and undisciplined.
The comic follows the adventures of a house full of simian roommates, an adorable little moppet, and a heroin-addicted sheep. From time to time, other characters who may be recognizable from the news pop up as well.
This comic updates on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and in January 2006 made the switch to full color.
Brad Hawkins was born in Iowa in the mid-1970s. Currently living in Austin, Texas, he divides his time between drawing Monkey Law, working as a computer technical support specialist, and doing nothing, nothing at all.
